Florida is beautiful. It depends on the pace you like. There are sleepy towns like St. Augustine (way north) & Naples (west coast) that are relaxing. Or if you want milder weather and rolling hills there's Tallahassee - I love college towns and they have 4 major Unis. If you need more action, I love Orlando it's got a downtown city life and a 20min. drive from the city centre there are quaint country towns like Winter Park. And who can resist Mickey? Down town Fort Lauderdale is nice especially Las Olas & Victoria Park neighborhoods - near the intercoastal but the cost of living is a bit high. Miami is like living in another country and I'm not kidding. There's a joke here that the United States doesn't begin until Fort Lauderdale! The politicians are corrupt (yes, we're the ones who had dead peoples votes!) & let's not forget Elian Gonzalez and that whole mess. But the diversity is great & if you can afford it you can live on Biscayne Bay - stunning view. Or if you're really adventurous try Key West - okay so it's Soddom in a Tropical setting - But you gotta love a place that celebrates the sunset everyday. Good luck and when you settle feel free to look me up: [email protected] :)

More casualties of the August 2002 KM
by funkyderek inmy father has just become a grandfather for the first time and may never get to see his grandson because my brother has cut off all ties with him.. my best friend was offered a free holiday by his parents so he would be away on the day of his sister's wedding.. and what have these people done to deserve such heinous treatment?
my father was disfellowshipped for adultery over twenty years ago, my best friend for smoking when he was seventeen.. i'm so mad i can't even put it into words properly.
i want to scream, i want to lash out at the despicable bastards who instigated this policy, and the snivelling cowards who obey it without question.. but what can i do?

Dedalus, I am so sorry for your pain. If you've ever shunned someone like I have, you think you're doing the right thing. You're given a choice - Loyalty to Jehovah or loyalty to a gross sinner. The disfellowshiped person is blamed for breaking up the family not the GB. That's the sick mentality, it feels harsh because it is. I think Dansk is right, we should all do something, a counter attack to that awful KM, that was one of my last meetings and every word reeked of hate toward the person who dared leave the borg. That's what we're up against - hatred and fear, I think the best way to counter that is kill 'em with kindness and remind them what true love is. My suggestion - Talk to your brother - be the bridge between him and your father - show them both how love unites families. I wish you all the best. - Victorian Sky

For those of you with personal experiences with the GB...
by logansrun inlet me start off by saying that i am fully and utterly through with the jws from both a logical and emotional point of view.
i'm happy and content in my decision to leave.
but one thing that i find very curious is the personalities of the gb members themselves.

Bradley, The only one I ever met personally was Dan Sydlik, he gave a dedication talk in the late eighties for the kingdom hall I grew up in. He was warm and seemed friendly to everyone whether they were an elder or publisher. He seemed amused by the brothers trying to kiss up to him. That's the impression he gave me, don't know if he's changed. - Victorian Sky

Does anyone know of an elder that actually helped a sexual abuse survivor?
by BLISSISIGNORANCE inthere are soooooooo many victims (although i prefer to use the word: survivor) of sexual abuse coming out of the borg and telling their horrible stories, including my own family.
i have read stories that made me feel either angry, frustrated, revolted, furious.............but they all made me feel sad.. in every story it seems that the wts, elders and jws in general have let the child and/or family down.
from my own personal experience i can say that the elders in the congregation where my child was abused didn't do anything to protect other kids, and certainly didn't show love and support for my child or our family.

Bliss, I am so sorry for what happened to you and especially to your child. My Uncle is the p.o of his congregation - I know he is sincere and has a genuine concern for the 'friends'. We talked about child abuse in the wts and the cover ups, He said, he's a father first an elder second. The body in his hall agreed that they would call the police despite what the society said, that the congregation had to be protected first then they would follow the Society as closely as possible. I thought that was interesting. He said, many elders he knows feel just as strongly and he can't believe that such decisions for cover ups were made in the first place. He has received death threats & insults for taking a stand on similar issues. He's confided in me that sometimes he wonders if he should step down because of everything that goes on. He doesn't know how I feel about the borg, he just knows I'm inactive and he tries to 'encourage' me. He's a good man but I can't help but notice that he seems burdened most of the time. I wonder if deep down he knows this isn't the truth. - Victorian Sky

I Was Told To "Read Between The Lines"
by minimus inyesterday, my wife and i got together with my brother and his wife for dinner.
they began talking about how they never thought they'd still be here in this system of things.they complained that the elders were often jerks and unfair.
they talked about how they hoped their disfellowshipped daughter would soon get reinstated.

Wow, Scary isn't it? I can't help but notice how much happier I am now that i've stopped going. You know how they warn that your life will fall apart if you leave, that JWs are the happiest people on earth? It's such Bull. There is an african proverb that says people are more afraid of what they could do with their life if really given the opportunity. There is a certain comfort in having someone else tell you what to do, think for you, make decisions for you but at what price? I feel so sorry for them. I'd rather not read between the lines and think for myself, live my own life and do it my way. - Victorian Sky

I agree with Rayzor, Bowling for Columbine was an amazing film and it's timely about the current war. Sandy, I saw the Hours and I respectfully disagree. It was down right depressing even though I cheered when Nicole won. Chicago is well deserved. Hope the third Lord of the Rings gets it's due next year. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed for the talented Julliane Moore to get an Oscar in the near future. - Victorian Sky

Where did you go on your last vacation? The Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island, Bahamas - my family and I go there every Dec & New Years - they have the largest aquarium in the Caribbean - you can walk through tunnels with fish swimming over head. There's this cool pyramid water slide I nearly died on. Stay in the Royal Tower and get a water view. They have a bridge suite that costs $25,000 per night! (no, we didn't stay there!) Where is the most Exotic place you have visited? The Scottish Highlands - I heard bagpipes echoing through the hills and mist - Froze my butt off in the summer but just a beautiful place. And I love their brogue - very sexy. What place would you recommend to a single person? New York City - an exciting place to explore & have fun. What place would you recommend to a married couple? Maui, that place is paradise on earth. I hear Italy (Portofino, Florence and Venice) are romantic but haven't been yet. What place would you recommend to a family with children? Disney World - It's like a giant playground. Have any of you experience strange or unusual events during your travels? I saw Tiger Woods at Atlantis, he dyed his hair blond - a strange sight - It was about 4 in the morning and we were headed to the airport, the lobby was practically deserted except for him and his friends. My brother gaped at him and said, 'Are you Tiger Woods?' he smiled and said 'Naw, who's he?' Then his friends laughed. He dumped the pretty girlfriend he was with about 2 months later. Where is the next place you are going to go to (vacation)? London to see family & bug the Queen:)

Is it bad?
by Elsewhere in.
i remember when i was a jw how everyone was constantly wondering whether certain things were bad or demonic or generally unacceptable to a true christian(tm).. it seems like they are completely obsessed with things like that... like the luau that minimus brought up in another thread or the smurfs.. when you were a jw, what were some of the "critical" things that everyone was obsessed with?.

When I was pioneering, the be an example don't stumble others chant - lead to me being counseled for listening to Def Leopard - bad, bad heavy metal music will invite the demons to dinner, Loved Duran Duran - The song 'Union of the Snake' what snake? One sister asked, Could it be Satan? Love Earth Wind & Fire - the demons could be floating overhead! Love Michael Jackson's Thriller naughty girl that I am. Love Reggae music - will be converted to the Rasta religion & get hooked on weed. I'm a movie freak so I watched what appealed to me even if it was rated R. Saw Aliens and my elder uncle wigged out - it has demonic overtones! & Terminator and The Sixth Sense - my demonic marathon continues. Never pray out loud, Satan might hear! - Oh brother. Also, I wear a celtic ring because I love the design - it's pagan, why am I wearing it? - They're so ridiculous, It feels great not to be so paranoid and afraid anymore! - Victorian Sky
